If you're new to dancing, you may want to start learning dances that are easier learn first and then progressing to more difficult dances. The question is where will you be dancing? Will you be dancing free style? Or do you want to learn how to dance with a partner? If you want to learn freestyle moves and you'll be dancing by yourself, anything goes. Watch dance videos and practice dancing in front of a large mirror. You can also watch people at clubs and imitate people that you enjoy watching. Feel the music and imagine that you and the music are one. Basically you'll be copying what you see other good dancers do and adding your own styling as you go. Bottom line is the more you move your feet, the better you'll become at free style dancing. If you have two left feet and love country music, try to find a nightclub that offers country line dance lessons. You'll find good dancers and beginners just like you. Line dancing is a great way to learn dance moves and styling. Then you can progress to couples dancing which is far more challenging. If you want to learn how to ballroom dance, the easiest dance by far is merengue. It's just a walking step and even though the moves and styling looks hard, it really isn't that hard to learn. Next I would suggest taking some group dance lessons or private lessons and start learning the basics of all the ballroom dances. You will like some dances more than others. And everyone is different. You might find one type of dance easy, while someone else might have a hard time learning it. The most difficult dances to learn for almost any beginner are west coast swing, lindy hop, hustle, and tango. You should be able to pick up most of the other dances including east coast swing and salsa, but it will take time. Don't expect to look good after one or two lessons. To become a good ballroom dancer, you must take many lessons and dance several times a week. Do you want to know what some of the ballroom dances look like? Watch our dance videos. Jeff Adams p.s. Other dances that are pretty easy to pick up are contra and square dancing if that's your style.
